DyeStat Discussions - EP814 - Eleonora Curtabbi
Published by
Eleonora Curtabbi, a senior at West Texas A&M representing Italy and the NCAA Division 2 indoor record holder in the 3,000 meters at 9:08.10 along with the reigning 3,000-meter steeplechase champion, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing March 10-11 in the mile and 3,000 at the Division 2 Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach. Curtabbi, who ran the fastest time in division history on a 200-meter banked track Feb. 26 at the Boston University Last Chance meet, eclipsed the 2021 record of 9:11.41 achieved by German athlete Celine Ritter of Lee University in Tennessee, with West Texas A&M teammate Florence Uwajeneza elevating to No. 3 all-time in Division 2 by clocking 9:14.36 in the same race at Boston University. Caroline Kurgat of Alaska-Anchorage ran 9:07.05 in 2019 on an oversized track at the Dempsey indoor facility at the University of Washington, which is the fastest overall performance in division history, although Curtabbi is recognized as the Division 2 record holder. Curtabbi also reflects on her 4:40.56 mile performance Feb. 10 at the Grand Valley State and her analysis of running the Division 2 championship meet on a banked track in Virginia Beach in comparison to last year's final on a 300-meter flat surface at Pittsburg State in Kansas. She examines the depth of both the Division 2 mile and 3,000 fields, and shares how meaningful it is to compete against reigning cross country champion Stephanie Cotter of Adams State, along with several other All-Americans. Curtabbi shares how significant distance coach Zach Daniel has been in her development and improvement at West Texas A&M, in addition to how much she learned from competing in the 3,000 steeplechase after winning the Division 2 title last May and producing a lifetime-best 9:49.74 in June in France. She also speaks about her motivation during the spring outdoor season to pursue the Division 2 steeplechase record of 9:40.68 produced by Adams State's Eilish Flanagan in 2021. Curtabbi also analyzes the potential for West Texas A&M to challenge Minnesota State and Adams State for the women's team title, which would be the program's first indoor championship since 2018.
